Haven Green Seniors Apartments to Rise on Elizabeth St. Garden Site

The Elizabeth St. Garden will be replaced by Haven Green, a new seven-story building with 121 new apartments that will be affordable to very-low income seniors. The redevelopment will also include 7,600-square-feet of publicly accessible open space on Elizabeth St. between Spring and Prince St.

“As public land grows more scarce in New York City, we see each remaining site as an opportunity to meet as many of the urgent needs and priorities of communities as possible,” said Maria Torres-Springer, commissioner of the Dept. of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

The public space design seeks to recreate many of the existing features and layout of the site, including passive spaces, sculptures and art pieces, lawns, diverse plantings, space for gardening, and open seating. Opponents who ant to preserve the Elizabeth St. Garden are still fighting the Haven Green plan, even as developers Pennrose Properties, LLC, Habitat for Humanity New York City (Habitat NYC), and RiseBoro Community Partnerships, Inc. plan to start construction.
